This was the main Naval position: “A piece of high ground in the centre of the Northern line of defence, was the first position selected for the Naval 12 pounders:

The lines of defence encircling Ladysmith were extensive, necessitating connecting telephones. A conning tower, the central position of the Naval Volunteers on Gordon Hill, made telecommunication possible to Headquarters, the Naval camp, and to Cove Redoubt.”
