Hindu Shiva Temple and Mahatma Gandi

Built in 1903 this rather unique temple looks almost miniature, yet it is reputed to have the largest cella dome of its kind in the southern hemisphere. The cella being the chief apartment of the temple where the statues of the Gods and Goddesses are placed. It is claimed that In 1913 Mahatma Ganhi prayed there while leading the coal miners’ march through the town. The temple can be found in Kirkland Street, between Ayliff and Bridger Street.
